Neelam (Blue Sapphire) in Astrology- By The Astrologer in India – Blue sapphire or Neelam is a blue colored gemstone that is sometimes transparent in its constitution. Blue sapphire (Neelam) can have several sub classifications, including Indraneelam, which is a lustrous sapphire stone in dark blue color, similar to a peacock’s neck. Another very common variant of Blue sapphire (Neelam) is Jalneelam which has darker shades of blue at its borders and less intense blue towards the centre.
Neelam stone is mined from various nations, including Australia, Sri Lanka whereas in India, the mines are located primarily in Kashmir and at various destinations in South India. Nevertheless, Neelam mined from Kashmir is believed to be the best.
Grading of Neelam and the right kind of Neelam gemstone that should be adorned:-
Neelam stone is graded by its characteristics and a Neelam that is adorned should have high clarity, a uniform composition and blue shine. However, if the Neelam has dark signs, gray marks, holes, crack or any such defects, or if the stone is formed as a mixture of two colors, it should not be adorned, as this could potentially have a negative impact on the wearer.
Upratnas and their significance:-
An Upratna is nothing but a semi-precious gemstone that can be used in place of the Jytish Ratna (Astrological Gemstone) for a planet. Blue Sapphire or Neelam is the Jyotish Ratna for Shani (Saturn), and is also known as Shaniratna. Some common Upratnas of Neelam are

Neelam- the gemstone of Lord Shani:-
Neelam is the gemstone for planet Shani (Saturn). Even though there are other planets that are more malefic than Shani, but Shanidev is the most renowned. This might be due to the Dhaiya and Sadhesati of Shani. Being the ‘Suryaputra’ (Son of Sun), Lord Shani is extremely powerful and is bigger than most planets in size. Moving slow is its characteristic.
Adorning a Neelam Gemstone (Blue Sapphire)
We can nullify the negative effects arising from unfavorable planetary position of Shani, and turn these around to make them favorable by adorning a Neelam gemstone. However, one should never adorn a Neelam without consulting his birth chart, as this could prove harmful.
